Individual counselling deals with either current problems or deeper psychological issues. Sometimes there is a lot of confusion between the terms ‘counselling’ and ‘psychotherapy’ and they are often used interchangeably. This is probably because there is often an overlap between them.
Counselling is a process whereby people can freely discuss and explore their problems in a confidential, safe, respectful and supportive environment, with a view to assisting or guiding clients towards finding solutions to their problems.
Sometimes counselling will drift more into the area of psychotherapy when it involves work on significant emotional events from the past (frequently from childhood), which interfere with a person's ability to function effectively and happily in the world.
Within the counselling and psychotherapy field, there are numerous approaches, each of them successful with a large number of people and types of problem. My approach is person-centred and holistic and I draw on various skills including:
